Job description

Structural Designer

Remote | Hybrid option: Melbourne, FL, Ellicott City, MD, or Pittsburgh, PA

Salary Range: $75,000 - $85,000

The Role

Above Group is looking for a Structural Designer to join our Structural Engineering team and help carry projects from concept through construction. Reporting to a Senior Structural Engineer, you will be responsible for the structural design of the projects you are assigned, producing CAD drawings and calculations and turning an engineer’s vision into clear, buildable documents. Your work will directly reflect the quality and vision of our company standards.

This is a hands-on role with room to grow. You will collaborate closely with engineers and project managers, visit active job sites to see how your designs come together, and support construction-phase work such as shop drawing reviews and RFIs. We rely on designers who work well both independently and as part of a team, communicate clearly, and are committed to excellence in everything they produce.

What You’ll Do

  • Create CAD drawings and calculations under the direction of structural engineers, and carry out the structural design of all projects to which you are assigned
  • Develop and implement design criteria and system designs from concept to construction, in line with company procedures, regulations, and client standards
  • Work alongside engineers to understand their vision and translate it into drawings and designs; support them with specific design tasks, markups, and review comments
  • Interpret Basis of Design (BOD) documents, field surveys, and code research; author BOD narratives and design criteria documents and edit design specifications
  • Coordinate with team members and other disciplines on the layout of structural systems and equipment locations
  • Review shop drawing submittals and respond to RFIs, submittals, and other construction-phase services tasks
  • Travel to job sites to gain a full picture of project conditions and construction progress
  • Attend weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly project meetings, as well as meetings with other departments, and keep engineering leads and project managers informed on timelines and deadlines
  • Incorporate feedback from project managers to deliver top-quality products for clients
  • Maintain current knowledge of codes, standards, and local regulations

What you Bring to the Role

  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Associate’s degree in computer drafting and design or a related field, preferred
  • Proficient in structural concepts including connection design, design loads, lateral systems, different materials, and foundation design
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Revit
  • Proficient in Bluebeam and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Knowledge of the functionality of 3D imaging cameras
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills; strong writing for BOD narratives, design criteria, specifications, and RFI responses; able to interface effectively with senior management
  • Strong work ethic; able to work independently/self-motivated, as well as in a collaborative team setting, highly organized, and detail oriented
  • Strong project management, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to multi-task
  • Strong time management with flexibility to adapt to changing schedules and duties
  • High levels of confidentiality, integrity, and dependability
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% for site visits and client meetings
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident of the U.S.

Nice to have: Experience with structural design tools such as STAAD, TEDDS, or RAM Structural System.
