Job description
Ensora Health is the leading provider of software and services for mental and behavioral health therapists, trusted by over 200,000 individual providers and more than 28,000 practices. Our unmatched expertise, partnership, and breadth of products allow us to fine-tune solutions that meet the specific needs of everyone from solo practitioners to larger practices. With AI-enabled solutions that span practice management to electronic medical records and e-prescribing to billing, we help eliminate administrative complexity and create harmony between therapists, their clients, and the whole healthcare community.
Job Description
This isn’t a maintain-the-status-quo role. We want someone who looks at how we work with PHP today, says “here’s a better way,” and then proves it. You’ll lead technical projects, work directly with leadership to define requirements, and raise the bar for the engineers around you.
What you’ll do
- Lead the design, build, and deployment of features and services using object-oriented principles and modern PHP practices.
- Challenge our current PHP patterns, tooling, and workflows, and champion improvements that make our code faster to ship, easier to maintain, and more secure.
- Explore and prototype new ways to use AI in our development lifecycle, such as AI-assisted code generation, refactoring, test creation, code review, and root-cause analysis. Then turn what works into repeatable team practices.
- Evaluate AI-assisted tools and set guidelines for using them responsibly, with human review, strong testing, and security standards.
- Work with leadership and product partners to define software requirements and translate business needs into sound technical plans.
- Take the lead on operational and technical projects, from scoping and estimation through delivery.
- Shape architecture decisions, designing reusable, testable components that scale.
- Diagnose and resolve complex bugs and performance issues, using logs, metrics, and traces to find root causes.
- Drive automated testing, including unit and integration tests, and improve coverage across the codebase.
- Lead by example in code reviews, give constructive feedback, and mentor engineers at every level.
- Apply secure coding practices and address common web and application security risks before they become problems.
- Keep technical documentation clear and current, using AI tools to help.
- Share what you learn through demos, lunch-and-learns, and written guides, so the whole team benefits.
What you bring
Required
- 6+ years of professional software development experience in an object-oriented language, with deep PHP expertise.
- Strong command of OOP principles, design patterns, and clean code practices.
- A track record of improving how a team builds software, not only what it builds.
- Hands-on experience using AI tools for coding, debugging, testing, or documentation, and sound judgment about when to trust their output and when not to.
- Experience working in a Linux-based development environment.
- Proficiency with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS3.
- Solid experience with relational databases and SQL/MySQL.
- Working knowledge of system architecture, debugging strategies, and observability (logs, metrics, tracing).
- A demonstrated commitment to code quality, testing, and maintainable design.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical partners.
Nice to have
- Experience building AI-powered features or integrating LLM APIs into PHP applications.
- Experience creating repeatable AI workflows for your team, such as shared prompts, test generation, or automated review.
- Experience with Docker or containerized environments.
- Exposure to AWS or other cloud platforms.
- Experience in healthcare or other regulated software environments.
